Amethyst, the rich purple variety of quartz, was once so rare that it was classified as one of the precious gems. Then large deposits of amethyst were discovered in Brazil in the 19th century.

• CHEMICAL COMPOSITION: Amethyst is a macro crystalline variety of Quartz with the chemical formula SiO2 (Silicon Dioxide). Experts attribute the purple colour of amethyst to small amounts of Iron Oxide (Fe2O3) impurities (approximately 40 parts per million) at specific sites in the crystal structure of quartz.

FORMATION:

Naturally occur in crystal form which are found in a large range of shapes, cuts and hues. These transparent prismatic crystals can be found in clusters as an incrustation (or druse) in a nodular stone, commonly known as a geode.

TREATMENT:

Heating is the most common treatment which can alter the color of a stone to lighten, darken, or change completely. Very dark amethyst is heated to produce lighter shades. Most of the amethyst available in the gem market is enhanced to get exotic shades. On treating Amethyst under controlled conditions one can produce some very astonishing colors or intensify the royal purple color at 400c to 600c.

Amethyst is a crystal whose powerful healing properties can be described as cleansing, calming and transforming. Amethyst can be used in healing as one of the healing stones for getting rid of alcohol, drugs or other kinds of addiction. Amethyst is the birthstone for the month of February.
