Origin of the Sodalite

Sodalite was first discovered in 1811 by Europeans in the remote regions of Greenland. It was not an important gemstone until 1891, when deposits of this fine mineral were discovered in abundance in Ontario, Canada. It typically occurs in a massive form in platonic igneous rocks in association with minerals like leucite, cancrinite, andradite, microcline, natrolite, etc.

How is Sodalite formed?

Sodalite forms in the igneous rocks which get crystallised from the sodium-rich magmas. This is where the name “sodalite” originates. These magmas not only contain sodium but also silicon and aluminium in little quantity.

Where are Sodalite found?

Sodalite is indeed a striking blue mineral that was discovered in the recent 19th century. It was found in the wild, remote regions of Greenland, where isolated mountains break the sky and icy water sparkles. This beautiful gemstone also has a rich source in the snows of Ontario, Canada.

Also, they are mined in the fragrant coasts of India, sand dunes of Namibia and from the abyss of sultry Brazil.
